Recent developments show a large increase in Natural Gas (NG) availability in the US. This leads to the potential for processes to convert NG to chemicals that are currently derived from crude oil such as olefins and aromatics. The Seeker is looking for novel ideas for methods to convert Natural Gas to a major chemical or chemical feedstock beyond those processes known today.
This is an Ideation Challenge with a guaranteed award for at least one submitted solution.
Detailed Description & Requirements
Background
Recent developments show a large increase in Natural Gas (NG) availability in the US; novel production methods to extract NG from shale reservoirs have reversed forecasts from the US becoming a net gas importing to a net gas exporting country. On the demand side, gas utilization is favored because it has the lowest CO2 emissions /energy ratio. At the same time, crude oil availability (as simply observed from its price) has been limited. In general, the gas-oil differential has been widening in the recent past and there are reasons to believe this broad gap will be continued well into the future.
This outlook offers interesting potential for processes to convert NG to products that are currently derived from crude oil, e.g. (liquid) transportation fuels and chemical feedstock as olefins and aromatics. Some processes already exist, for example:
Gas-To-Liquids, GTL, process converting NG via synthesis gas intermediate (a mixture with varying ratios of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, often containing carbon dioxide as well) to paraffinic products using Fischer-Tropsch
